Firefly isn't a someone who works well with others. In fact, no one knows what he looks like. He is known only by his work. Even Cobra Commander doesn't know much about Firefly. His fees are paid into a Swiss bank account and are always payable in advance. He makes no guarantees and gives no refunds. Cobra likes to use him when a single saboteur is needed to quietly break into a secured location and cause some trouble.
Firefly's infiltration skills are legendary; no one has ever reported seeing him enter or leave any target area. An expert in mountain climbing, he uses his skills to break into places that are supposed to be out of reach. He can scale a cliff or building as easily as a fly walking up a wall. No building, or mission, is too tough. Firefly is a world-class long-range rifleman and an expert in the field of close-range combat with a pistol and submachine gun. He has highly developed reflexes and expertise in hand-to-hand martial arts combat, as well as being an expert with various weaponry and explosives. Firefly has a high enough degree of skill in martial arts to infiltrate the same ninja clan that produced Storm Shadow and Snake Eyes.
What makes Firefly especially dangerous is his shrewd tactical mind combined with absolute ruthlessness. Firefly is an expert in NATO and Warsaw Pact explosives and detonators and specializes in bomb-planting, arson, and booby-traps. Firefly constructs bombs protected by unique cross-wired, anti-tampering switches so complex that they are impossible to defuse. Always places his charges in the one place that affords maximum damage.
He performs jobs flawlessly and with untraceable precision almost every time–the few exceptions being when the G. I. Joe Team has been able to foil his plans. He is out to get them in particular because they have ruined some of his best operations. He does display an impressive knowledge of incendiary and pyrotechnic materials such as magnesium, napalm, and white phosphorous, but over the years he may have come to enjoy his work a little too much. The only drawback to using Firefly is also the source of his code name: he takes far too much pleasure in causing his targets to burn, sometimes uncontrollably. He still remains on the loose, his true identity a secret, ready to take on his next job. Those assignments have become somewhat rarer, however, and Firefly suspects some person or organization has been trying to steal his business.
Firefly has been Cobra Commander’s number one contract man and primary source of demolitions and destruction since the Cobra’s inception. It is rumored that Firefly took care of some personal family matters for Cobra Commander and has been on the payroll ever since. Since that time, Cobra has expanded to include entire battalions of bomb-planters, arsonists, and booby-trappers, but Cobra Commander still keeps contacting Firefly, the "Rembrandt of plastic explosives," when a job needs precision bombing. His skills in cross-wiring, anti-tamper, and secondary timers have allowed him to achieve a near 100% success rate over the years. This record was eventually broken by G. I. Joe team member, Snake-Eyes.
To avoid any future confrontation, Firefly moved his operations in 1998 to the Cobra Polar Base as part of the Polar Force. He focused on sabotaging top secret, arctic research facilities, and used Night-Creepers to steal their classified documents. Firefly would later be contracted for various jobs in the United States in 2002 through 2004. He would be given a year-long contract as a member of the Strike Team - Urban Division where he would be again closely associated with Night Creepers. His next contract in 2005 would tie him to the Crimson Guard Force.
