Along with the newest 2003 deployment of Python-class H.E.A.T. Vipers, Lampreys, Rock Vipers reported in the Python Patrol, the Laser Viper has been upgraded from its
deployment in 2001. Unlike most of the Python Patrol
troopers, the Python-class Laser Viper is returning to its original incarnation as a support unit . This Viper's primary purpose is to provide laser targeting for personnel, such as the Python-class H.E.A.T. Vipers' bazookas and Major Bludd's grenade launcher, and on the ground targeting for the Python Patrol's A.S.P. units and captured and reverse-engineered Pythonized* G.I. Joe Conquest X-30's. Combining the Python Laser Viper's Pythonized* uniform with his extremely mobile laser targeting equipment, the Python Laser Viper performs precision homing on a laser-designated target, ensuring highly effective first shot kill at extended ranges while remaining undetected.
The Python Laser Viper is not a forward attack unit like the rest of the Python Patrol and are not usually found as part of the Python Patrol's main offensive units. The Python Laser Viper will typically take up sniper-like positions and target oppositional forces while other forces cooperate with targeted strikes. Also, Python Officers that are assigned to front line units will function as artillery spotters for Python Laser Vipers. This type of scenario of a Python Officer and a Python Laser Viper working in tandem has been known to be quite devastating to an unprepared enemy, provided Cobra can accompany them with enough firepower in H.E.A.T. Vipers, A.S.P.s, and Conquests.
The Python Laser Viper typically does not carry arms and will usually be protected by a few Python Vipers or Troopers to assist with defense and cover. There are generally two non-lethal ways to retard Laser Vipers. The first is simply to neutralize all enemy units. If there are no assault troops or vehicles for the Laser Viper to direct, Laser Vipers become useless on the battlefield. The second is if laser-obscuring methods are taken to block laser targeting equipment. While difficult and specialized, it is possible.
