Iron Grenadiers are Destro's elite ground forces, the backbone of his personal army of the same name. Lured from the world's finest military institutions by the promise of wealth and power, Destro delivers both to those skilled enough and greedy enough to make the cut. Intensely trained in both economics and warfare, they are equally prepared to sell M.A.R.S.* armaments and armor to even the most reticent customer, or use those same arms to utterly conquer them. They are the de facto standard of elite trooper, more efficient and feared than
Crimson Guard troops.
While these elite troops are all ruthlessly loyal to Destro (even the Iron Grenadiers subcontracted by Cobra Commander), General Mayhem's regiment could be considered the elite of the elite. Equipped with the next generation M.A.R.S.* ultra-light body armor
upgraded and redesigned from the
Night-Viper uniforms and Iron Grenadier tactical battle helmets, they primarily consist of former Spetsnaz (Soviet Special Forces) troops and officers, as well as other mercenaries personally selected by Destro for their knowledge of the territory and devotion to the Iron Grenadiers cause. The new body armor features a battlefield combat shoulder bandolier, a high-tech signal kit, hydraulic-enhanced, energized power regulators, a laser side arm retention holster, leather padded shin protectors, and a tele-communications translator.
It should be carefully noted that the 2005 deployments of Iron Grenadiers have not replaced the earlier
deployments, only augmented them. All previous deployments of Iron Grenadiers are still considered highly dangerous and elite soldiers.
From intelligence gatherings: "Destro (an international arms dealer) is always expanding his M.A.R.S. (Military Armaments Research Systems) Corporation to create new weapons factories all around the world. He has set his sights on several secret industrial complexes in the former Soviet Union and is using his inside man (General Mayhem, a former Spetsnaz officer and brilliant strategist), to execute his plan. With his new Iron Grenadiers and elite brigade of Iron Anvil paratroopers led by Metal Head, Destro’s forces have invaded a former Soviet Bloc toy factory and plan to ship weapons systems under the toy brand of Destr-uct-o Blocs. Under this cover, they believe that they will be able to distribute their products globally, unnoticed by the western world."
