Satellite surveillance technology is absolutely vital to modern military intelligence.  Intricate tracking satellites must be maintained and repaired on site.  As both Cobra's and M.A.R.S.'* networks of "eyes-in-the-sky" grows older, more and more repairs are needed, necessitating more technicians capable of withstanding repeated high-G launchings and enduring long terms in orbit.  Among Cobra's vast array of specialized Vipers, the only ones qualified – besides Iron Grenadier T.A.R.G.A.T.s – for duty in the dangerous voids of space are the Astro-Vipers.

Astro-Vipers (or "Cobranauts") are recruited from the ranks of the Strato-Vipers, those Night Raven pilots, who are naturally and artificially conditioned for high-altitude flying and high-G maneuvering.  Astro-Vipers pilot the Cobra Stellar Stilletos and Iron Grenadier F.E.R.A.s (translates as "Injure"), man orbital stations, and do satellite repair work.  Astro-Vipers are outfitted with an anti-implosion, G-force resistant space suit, Astro-Viper helmet with face shield, hip mounted, high-impact leg braces, satellite repair technicians bandolier, and steel plated gravity boots.

Astro-Vipers were first deployed with Cobra in 1988.  In 1991, Cobra contracted some of their Astro-Vipers to Destro for use with this Iron Grenadiers in Brazil.  Destro knew he could count on these Vipers not only because of their specialized training and abilities, but also because they are exceptionally ruthless in battle.  In 1993, Astro-Vipers returned to Cobra service with a new uniform coloring.  The Astro-Viper has not returned to service with Cobra or the Iron Grenadiers since Cobra's resurrection in 1997, but their uniform has upgraded and redeployed with the Cobra intelligence operatives known as Shadow Vipers.
