Recoil was a marathon runner and professional body builder before he joined G. I. Joe. His excellent physical shape put him in good stead to be a LRRP (Long Range Recon Patrol) or "Lurp". LRRP units sneak out into the bush carrying 100 pounds of gear, including rations, radio, weapons, ammo, and climbing rope. They are expected to penetrate deep within enemy territory, gather intelligence, and extricate themselves without being detected. LRRP members who actually have to use their weapons aren't considered true LRRPs.
Recoil would be a lot more popular with his team mates if he wasn't practicing his slealth abilities all the time. When people ask him what his job in the Army is, he tells them, "Being quiet."
In 1993, the design for Recoil's hat and jacket were used for the Brazilian G.I. Joe Forca Fera operative Tigor. In 1994, it appears that Cobra utilized a copy of the same jacket with their Brazilian Sky Patrol-equivalent operative Escorpiao Voador.
Since G.I.
Joe's reinstatement in 1997, Recoil has not yet been re-enlisted with the G.I.
Joe Team.
