Prior to joining Cobra, Dissent was a respected United States soldier noted for his dedication to doing the job and doing it by-the-book. He was also noted for having a high level of patriotism and pride while serving in the U.S. military. His reasons for leaving have only become clear through intercepted letters to his family. During June of 1999's Operation Joint Guardian in Kosovo, something occurred that made Dissent turn his back on the government in which he took so much pride. While this event is unclear, what ever it was lead Dissent to feel is was his duty to make a stand against the U.S. with violent protest. It is clear that he considers himself alike to George Washington and sees corruption against the common citizen within the current U.S. government administrations and structure.
Since Dissent's rebellion, he has communicated to family members that the Bush administration's mishandling of the first national budget surplus in years and transparently political, ill-planned occupation of Afghanistan and Iraq has only strengthened his resolve that what he’s doing is right.
Dissent has risen to his rank within Cobra rapidly during the few brief years since he went AWOL in 2001. It is presumed this is due to his exemplary performance he also displayed while serving the country in which he was born. He's intelligent, energetic, and willing to take on projects to better the efficiency and effectiveness of the Cobra military. Intelligence reports have gleaned two possible leverage points against this individual. Potentially, Dissent could be persuaded to become tool against Cobra if he perceived that his family's well-being were at stake. This could also cause the opposite intended effect and strengthen his resolve instead. Finally, Dissent's personality type and ideology grates against some of Cobra's other operatives, even within his own unit. Not everyone in Cobra has joined strictly for altruistic reasons. If Cobra were to reject Dissent without disposing of him, information he has may prove useful.
